Training
LUUSAC offers a wide variety of training throughout the academic year for both new and qualified divers. The sections in the menu above should cover all the information you need to find out what we can offer you and what it will cost. If the information you need cannot be found here or in the FAQs then do not hesitate to Contact Us.
New Divers
We take on up to 30 people completely new to diving every year. The training we give will take you to the level of BSAC Sports Diver, a qualification that you can use anywhere in the world to dive up to 35m.
It all begins with your try-dive, at the Edge swimming pool. These try-dives typically occur in the first week or so of the first term and offer the chance to experience what it's like to get underwater with some SCUBA kit!
Your training up to Sports Diver will include theory lectures, two theory tests, pool training, and open water training. At least some of your training will take place in Capernwray, a purpose-built inland quarry filled to the brim with things to look at and discover: boats, helicopters, planes, a diving bell, and more - it's constantly being added to! You can choose whether you want to complete the rest of your open water training in the UK, or abroad on one of our Easter trips.
Over the last 5 years, the club has taken over 100 people to places locations including Turkey, Cyprus, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura to complete their open water training. It has always been a fabulous week of diving and social events.
Once you're qualified, you can then join in on the many pleasure trips organised by other club members throughout the year. Alongside the Easter trip abroad, we regularly run trips all over the UK to sites including St Abbs, the Scottish Lochs, Scapa Flow, and various sites along the south coast. Have a look at some of the recent trip reports to see where we go and what we get up to.
Qualified Divers
We welcome divers of all qualifications, from all agencies. Whether you have an entry-level qualification, are highly experienced, an instructor, have dived while abroad, or are a hardened UK diver, we have something to offer you.
Although we are a BSAC organisation you can use club qualifications from any recognised diving organisations to dive with us. We offer a familiarisation weekend at the beginning of the year to allow you to meet some club members and give you the opportunity to experience UK diving. This is also a chance to receive some training in using a drysuit if you haven't tried this before.
For people who are interested in doing more advanced training to BSAC Dive Leader or beyond, the club offers training at all levels throughout the year.
We are also keen to welcome new instructors to the club. We have an active training schedule and can always use another keen pair of hands. If you are a diving instructor from another agency and would like to continue teaching, it is a very easy process to cross over and become a BSAC Instructor. For more information, get in contact with the Diving Officer.
Below is a guide to the BSAC diver grade progression and the equivalent qualifications of other agencies. If your agency is not present in the table or if you have any questions about the BSAC translation of your qualification then please email the Diving Officer.
